The reserve is dog friendly with dogs allowed all year round. Of the ancient woodland here, much of it would have been managed as oak coppice. Parts of the reserve were formerly used as a market garden and you can still find cultivated strawberry plants growing during the summer. The reserve is used for butterfly monitoring by the Natural Environment Research Council.
